... is a free Macintosh program to scrutineer ballroom dance events (or
other contests using the Skating System to determine winners).
Brief Overview
A Ballroom Dance "Competition" takes place during one or more
days and comprises several "events". Two or more "couples" contest
each event, performing one or more "dances" (e.g. Foxtrot, Samba).
Data for each competition is kept in a file which, when open,
is visible in manipulatable form such as this:

Until the first score sheet is entered, the couples, judges, dances
and a schedule of rounds are all editable via buttons shown above.
The current round is shown underlined ("Quarterfinal" in the above
picture). With the dance buttons (W, T, F, Q above) you can enter
scores for the current round or review scores of earlier rounds.
When the radio button selects the current round, these buttons
indicate which dances have been marked (green) and which are yet
to be marked (red and underlined). When all dances of a round
are scored, the "scoring button" at bottom right becomes active,
and allows you to display results -- showing which group(s) of
couples may advance to the next round (from a preliminary round)
or the ranking of the competitors and tie-breaking explanations
(for the final round). You may correct scores of the current round
until the "Advance Button" is pressed, which advances to the next
round (permitting you to decide how many couples to recall if
ties make it impossible to advance exactly the number scheduled
for recall). You may review scores of previous rounds by selecting
the appropriate radio button ? in which the "Score ..." button
at lower right becomes a "Review ..." button.
Good typists will appreciate the ability to perform all operations
via the keyboard, without recourse to the mouse. Others may appreciate
the ability to use the mouse for almost all operations.
Competition experience:
MacScrutineer was already in use in 1996, when versions v0.2.5 through 0.3.9 of MacScrutineer
successfully scored five different ballroom dance competitions in Northern
California. The current version is v2.0.2.
MacScrutineer Manual:
The manual, containing 23 illustrated pages, is in Acrobat Reader format.
Of course you may discover
that MacScrutineer is so intuitively designed that you don't need
it.
